Batman # 41

NOTE: This interview with Scott Snyder took place in advance of DC’s release of solicitation for June’s Batman #41. That solicit reads, in whole: “The all-new Batman makes his debut! Who is he, and what happens next? Find out here as a new era begins in Gotham City!”

Solicitation art, seen here, seems to show an armored or perhaps robotic Batman. Click on the thumb for a full-size version or click here for a super-sized version.

Writer Scott Snyder is deep into his fifth year of living with Batman, having started with a run on Detective Comics in early 2011, and making the jump to the Batman title with the launch of DC’s “New 52” later that year. For most of his stint on the title, Batman has been DC’s top-seller, and Snyder has garnered critical acclaim.

Batman #40 variant cover by Andy Kubert...// Exclusive Preview: Batman, Bane & Poison Ivy Signal the Beginning of Joker's Endgame in Batman #40

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman saga—at least the Bruce Wayne tale that we know—is set to end with issue #40. And ever since the series relaunched in DC’s New 52, it’s been a pithy, tense ride for Dark Knight fans. With the opening Court of Owls arc, Batman fans were forced to face an ugly truth: this Batman, he has blind spots. And the arc uncovered a decades-old secret society from Gotham’s darkest corners, the titular Court of Owls. It doesn’t happen often, but the arc made readers question Batman’s hold over the very city he made safer—a grip that loosened after The Joker turned batman against his very own support system in the following Death of the Family event.

Like the arc before it, Death of the Family sought to knock down norms in the Bat-universe. It shined a light on the weaknesses of Batman’s own team—ultimately setting the Dark Knight aside as a lone hero, a lesson the Joker’s still trying to brand into Batman. But as Snyder’s described in interviews before, Death of the Family was the comedy, while the latest Joker tale, Endgame, is the tragedy. And after combating a powerful toxin that’s left Gotham crippled and zombified, Batman’s not only out of ideas: he’s desperate. The Endgame series has seen him call on the Court of Owls—we all saw how that worked out—and now he’s moved on to an even more surprising branch of support: some of his most iconic enemies.

In issue #40, we’ll see Bane, Poison Ivy and more fight alongside Gotham’s finest. With this issue winding up an already great arc—one that promises to be a gateway to the next Batman story—issue #40 is required reading.

Today, we’ve got an exclusive preview of issue #40. The pages that follow bring us from Joker’s toxic origin straight to the present, where Poison Ivy and Bane fight alongside the Dark Knight himself. Also—Bane and Batman? With hands clasped together? In a non-violent manner? It gave me chills.

Here’s DC’s description:

The finale of “Endgame” is here! Batman risks everything against The Joker! Who will laugh last?

Batman #40 is set for an April 29 release through DC Comics.

Animated Spider-Man Movie Planned for 2018 Release....

Spider-Man purists are about to wish they could sling a web and swing three years into the future. With the numerous live-action Spider-Man movies in recent years, it’s been a while since Spidey has been in his original animated form before a large audience. Though it will still be a while, Sony announced at CinemaCon on Thursday that an animated Spider-Man movie is planned for a 2018 release.

According to Time, the film will be written and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who worked together on The Lego Movie and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Meanwhile, the live-action Spider-Man will appear in theaters for a cameo in Captain America: Civil War in May 2016 and again for Marvel and Sony’s reboot of the franchise, which is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017. That’s three consecutive years of the iconic super-hero on the silver screen to get your Spidey senses tingling.

Netflix's Daredevil Gets Second Season, New Showrunners

With the smash success of the first season of Daredevil, Marvel and Netflix have signed on for a second season, available to stream in 2016.

The Man Without Fear will return with new showrunners Doug Petrie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) who worked closely with executive producers Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard during the first season. Petrie, Ramirez, Goddard and Jeph Loeb will serve as Executive Producers for the second season.

“While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season,” DeKnight explains, “I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”

Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones will premiere on Netflix later this year and Luke Cage is set for a 2016 release date.

Marvel's Spider-Man Will Not Be Another Orgin Story !!!!!!!

Sometime in 2016, the youngest version of Spider-Man yet will be introduced in a Marvel Studios movie. It hasn’t been announced officially but you can count on the character appearing in Captain America: Civil War, setting up for his own solo movie in 2017.

This of course, is the third live-action Spider-Man series to appear in theaters in a decade and represents another reboot of the story of Peter Parker. Sony Pictures, who own the film rights to the property and its long history of Marvel Comics stories, have partnered with Marvel Studios to try again at making Spider-Man one of the most prominent superhero movie characters (The Amazing Spider-Man films failed at this) and since this reboot will be the first time the character appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’re starting with a very young Peter Parker. But don’t worry, they won’t be retreading the same territory.

It’s important to note, that while Marvel is looking to introduce a Peter Parker who’s in high school and only 15-16 years old, the next web-slinger adventure will not be another origin story.

That’s the number one concern in response to any news related to the next Spider-Man’s age. We’ve already seen the radioactive spider bite origin story twice onscreen and Marvel Studios is fully aware of this. In fact, the Spider-Man who will appear next year is already a super-powered hero trying to make a difference in New York. You just haven’t met him yet. Speaking with CraveOnline today at the Avengers: Age of Ultron press junket, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained how they’ll be handling the introduction of Peter Parker.

“In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.”

“It will not be an origin story. But, with great power comes great responsibility. It is inherent to who his character is. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers.”

“There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade  version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet. [Laughs]“

By “reveal it in different ways,” Feige is essentially saying that Marvel won’t be ignoring Parker’s origin story, just that Spectacular Spider-Man (rumored title) just won’t be a film about how he got his powers and who he was before. Instead, when we meet Parker next year – a year before his own movie –  he’ll already be a hero in his own way. What the Spider-Man solo movie in 2017 can do is instead include flashback sequences and/or references to explain how he got his powers, similar to how Marvel’s TV division handled Daredevil’s origins in his new Netflix series. When viewers meet Matt Murdock in episode one, he already kicks ass and is a vigilante.

The “homemade” costume reference is also interesting statement because it could be a hint towards one element of the Marvel Civil War story where Iron Man (who’s rumored to appear in Spectacular Spider-Man) gives Spider-Man a new and more advanced costume.

For fans looking for an adult Peter Parker, think of it this way: This is the first time Spider-Man appears in the MCU so to start old would diminish the opportunity of keeping the character around long-term and take advantage of decades worth of stories, team-ups, villains, etc.. Not to mention, it wouldn’t quite fit the established film continuity if a famous superhero had already resided in New York for over a decade…

Comparisons have already been made to Harry Potter so it’s possible Marvel can be thinking super-long-term and that this new Spidey can be around for multiple phases of the MCU. Rumor has it, plans are already in place to have Peter Parker be the face of Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 while the other core heroes are unavailable until Part 2.

Daredevil Red Costume Finally Revealed !!!!!!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to enter a new world (both figuratively and literally), as Marvel Studios partners with Netflix to launch a darker, grittier, more adult-themed series in Daredevil. With all episodes of season 1 just hours away from premiering (at the time of writing this), it’s time to for one last big marketing push to show fans and general audiences why this Marvel project is worth investing in.

You can view clips from the show (centering on both character and action) below, followed by an explanation of how Daredevil connects to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and finally, Daredevil’s full-fledged red costume has been revealed.

Where and when the red costume will appear in the series remains to be seen: we already know that Matt Murdock starts out with the black ninja sweat suit seen in Frank Miller’s The Man Without Fear miniseries. The suit will evolve over the course of the series, eventually ending with the red suit. As always, a motion poster or still image is one thing – but the real measure of the costume’s quality will be seeing it in motion onscreen.

Marvel’s Daredevil premieres all of season 1 on Netflix on Friday April 10th.

The Great Stan Lee Signed a Comic Fans Back ( John Engle ) WOW!!!!!!

With the help of tattoo artist Kelly Rogers, lifelong comics fan John Engle has spent the past year transforming his back into a tribute to the characters he loves. There, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Carnage and Venom share space with Batman, The Joker and Spawn — Engle enjoys a good intercompany crossover.

However, there was one thing missing: Stan Lee’s seal of approval. And over the weekend at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, Engle got it. The legendary creator signed his back, just above Spider-Man (where else?), then Rogers made the famous signature permanent.

“Meeting Stan Lee was just icing on the cake,” Engle told WMFE.. “Just an incredible experience. He signed my back and Kelly tattooed it. And aw, it’s just the thrill of a lifetime. Really, really cool.“

“We were both shaking we were so excited,” Rogers added on his Instagram page. “I am so honored and proud to be able to help give him a tattoo experience like no other.”

"Spider-Verse" Swings into "Secret Wars" with New Warzones! Tale

Though Dan Slott's "Spider-Verse" event ends this month, several Spiders -- including Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man India, Spider-UK, Spider-Man Noir and Mayday Parker -- will return for a "Secret Wars" Warzones! event in Mike Costa and Andre Aruajo's "Spider-Verse" #1.

In a Nerdist exclusive, Costa spoke a little about his vision for the series. He revealed that "Spider-Verse" #1 would pick up for the characters after "Amazing Spider-Man" #14 and #15, but added that it was a self-contained story and that "the entire 'Secret Wars' event is structured in such a brilliant way that entry into almost all the stories is as smooth as possible."

When asked about the infamous Spider symbiote suit, Costa would neither confirm nor deny its involvement in his "Secret Wars" story. "I don’t know how I can answer that question without a spoiler so I’ll just say this: When I was a kid, 'What If?…The Alien Costume had Possessed Spider-Man' left an indelible mark on my impressionable mind."

Though he got to tackle fan favorites like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham, Costa shared that Spider-Man India was the one that took him by surprise. "There’s a real richness there, and so many unique things about him that set him apart from the other cast-members. This book is the most he’s gotten to shine outside of his original mini-series, and I’m really excited about that."

The interview also included the official solicitation for "Spider-Verse" #1: "Spinning out of the SPIDER-VERSE event, a team of Spiders find themselves face-to-face with Battleworld! Starring SPIDER-GWEN, SPIDER-MAN NOIR, SPIDER-MAN: INDIA, MAYDAY PARKER, SPIDER-UK and SPIDER-HAM!”"

Though there is no official release date for "Spider-Verse" #1, it will likely be released this spring and summer with the larger "Secret Wars" event. Check out the full interview at the Nerdist for more from Mike Costa.
