BREAKING: Len Wein - Co-Creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing & More Has Passed Away....

BREAKING: Len Wein - Co-Creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing & More Has Passed Away....

Len Wein, the best-selling comic book writer and editor who co-createdWolverine and Swamp Thing and editedWatchmen, has passed away. He was 69 years old.

The comics community is beginning to respond on social media after Spider-Manwriter Brian Michael Bendis tweeted out a memoriam message.

Wein's first professional comics story was "Eye of the Beholder" in 1968's Teen Titans #18. Wein co-wrote the story with soon-to-be-Titans legend Marv Wolfman, and co-created the male Starfire, later known as Red Star and the son of Constantin Kovar, who appeared onArrow last season.

Creating characters was something that Wein would do a lot throughout his long comics career. He is best known for two original creations of his that have forever altered the landscape of superhero comics, both of which have had successful screen adaptations: Wolverine was just portrayed in Logan, one of the most critically-acclaimed superhero movies ever made, wrapping a solo trilogy following three X-Men films where he was the de facto main character. The other is Swamp Thing, originally created for DC’s anthology title House of Secrets; Swamp Thing was a key property in the evolution and exposure ofWatchmen co-creator Alan Moore as a mainstream, American superhero writer.

In the 1970s, Wein wrote regularly for MarvelComics, beginning with a one-and-done story in Daredevil #71 co-written with writer/editor Roy Thomas.

Wein would eventually succeed Roy Thomas as editor-in-chief of Marvel's comics line in 1974, but turned the job over to Wolfman a little over a year later and return to writing, with runs on Marvel Team-Up, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Mighty Thor andFantastic Four.

Wein and artist Dave Cockrum revived the X-Men in 1975, creating an army of new characters to populate the book, including Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, and Thunderbird; this is when Wolverine, created earlier by Wein with artists John Romita Sr. and Herb Trimpe, joined the team. Wein and Cockrum plotted out the next few issues, essentially priming the pump for writer Chris Claremont, who scripted the issues and began a legendary run on the title.

After Wein's relationship with Marvel management soured in the late '70s, Wein went to DC as a writer and eventually editor. He wrote long runs on Batman and Green Lantern, where he first collaborated withWatchmen's Dave Gibbons. He also worked with John Ostrander to co-write the Legendsevent miniseries, where the modern-era Suicide Squad was introduced.

Besides Watchmen, Wein worked Camelot 3000, The New Teen Titans, Batman and the Outsiders, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and All-StarSquadron as an editor.

Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wein wrote the Ted Kord Blue Beetleseries, as well as providing scripts for the start of George Perez's groundbreaking reinvention of Wonder Woman.

After leaving DC, Wein was editor-in-chief of Disney Comics for three years in the early 1990s.

Next, he headed to TV, serving as a writer and story editor on X-Men, Batman, Spider-Man,Street Fighter, and more. In 2001, he and Wolfman wrote the screenplay "Gene Pool" for the production company Helkon, and later adapted it for a one-shot comic book for IDW Publishing. In 2005 and 2006, Wein appeared frequently as a panelist on the Los Angeles theatre version of the TV game show What's My Line?.

In the latter part of his comics career, Wein and Wolfman wrote a one-shot titled Gene Poolfor IDW, based on an unproduced screenplay the two had developed; he also worked onConan: The Book of Thoth, The Victorian, TheSimpsons, Futurama, and most recently a return to Swamp Thing and a run on Metal Men in the Legends of Tomorrow miniseries.

In recent months, Wein has undergone a number of surgeries, with the final tweet on his official account indicating that he came through surgery, "which went very well," on September 7.

Wein was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2008.

The History of Batman as the Joker !!!!!!

The History of Batman as the Joker !!!!!!

The Long, Twisted History of Batman As the Joker

Batman and The Joker have long been depicted as dark mirrors of one another, with the Clown Prince of Crime serving as the Dark Knight’s shadow self. He’s the one who whispers the secrets Batman struggles to keep buried; he’s what Batman fears he could become.

Those fears are about to become reality, at least within the DC Universe, both in the unleashing of the Batman Who Laughs in the Dark Nights: Metal tie-in “Gotham Resistance,” and in Sean Gordon Murphy’s upcoming miniseries Batman: White Knight.

RELATED: Meet the Horrific Robins of the Batman Who Laughs

Announced in June, a series of seven Metal one-shots will introduce the evil Batmen of the Dark Multiverse, including the Batman Who Laughs, a disconcerting melding of the Dark Knight and the Joker. However, we’ve had hints of such an unholy union, highlighting that the arch-nemeses are, just beneath the surface, one and the same.

One of the first, brief glimpses of that can be found in Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. In the 1989 graphic novel, the relationship between the Joker and Batman is depicted to be more than merely a grudging bond between sworn enemies. Here, all the Joker wants is to reveal what the world is to Batman.

Unlike some of Gotham’s other villains, the Joker has evolved alongside Batman. He’s functioned as the hero’s dark twin, even adopting a companion in the form of Harley Quinn. The Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime grew together, and grew apart, throughout the decades, but it wasn’t really until Morrison returned to Batman, beginning in the mid-2000s, that we’d see Batman and the Joker as close as lovers.

During the Morrison reign, when the Dark Knight “died,” the Joker stepped up — wearing an all-black suit — and began to work as a vigilante, helping the replacement Batman and Robin. He disguised himself as world-famous author and amateur detective Oberon Sexton, and was vital in almost all of the investigations undertaken by Dick Grayson, then in the identity of Batman. At one point, Robin even suspected that Sexton is Bruce Wayne himself, so similar are the two. However, that’s what tips off Grayson that Sexton is actually the Joker, because who else would so closely resemble Wayne?

The Joker winds up killing Batman’s enemy, the almost-unstoppable Doctor Hurt, who is, according to Morrison, the devil himself. The Joker succeeds where even Batman failed, demonstrating the two are more alike than different. And perhaps, if he tried, the Joker might even be a better Batman than Batman.

Now let’s turn to alternate universes, where we can see how thin of a line separates Batman from the Joker, and how easily it can be scratched out. On some versions of Earth-2, the Joker is a hero — the one man strong and smart enough to hold out against the Crime Syndicate, an evil version of the Justice League. In yet another world, Joker is really nothing more than Bruce Wayne’s trusted father figure Alfred, disguised as a villain in order to give his brokenhearted charge something to fight. In Forever Evil, Alfred and the Joker are the same — each the closest thing to family the Batman of Earth-3 has.

Even when the world changes, as it did in Flashpoint, their closeness is apparent. There, perhaps more than anywhere else, can you see how much a part of Batman the Joker is. When it’s a young Bruce Wayne who dies, his parents Martha and Thomas are thrust apart, and put upon drastically different paths. His father takes up the emblem of the bat, but is a much darker vigilante, and his mother becomes the Joker. Their miniseries ends with the two embracing over the grave of their son.

Then there’s Bob Hall’s 1989 Elseworlds story I, Joker, in which the legend of the Batman inspires a cult in a near-future Gotham. There the Joker, a possible descendant of Bruce Wayne, breaks the cult leader’s control of the city, and emerges as its hero — the new Batman.

It’s not only in DC comics that we see how seamlessly the Joker and Batman can switch places. Nemesis, the Iconic comic by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, was initially teased as “What if Batman was the Joker?” Starring a supervillain dressed in white costume not dissimilar to Batman’s, the series examines what might happen if the Dark Knight were to fall.

RELATED: The Joker Gets a New Alias in Batman: White Knight

But while Nemesis reimagines the Caped Crusader as a villain, Sean Gordon Murphy’s upcoming DC project Batman: White Knight depicts the Clown Prince of Crime as the hero. Debuting in October, the miniseries features the Joker as a folk hero waging a war against a tyrannical Batman. The idea holds an indomitable sway because, the truth is, the Joker works so much better as a hero, and perhaps the Batman as a villain.

That’s part of the source of their friction: the darkness that fills the gap between them. Each sees how perfect and pure the other would be if the other just came to his side. It’s undeniable that the two work exceedingly well as partners. After all, it took the two of them to take down the Devil. However, that’s not the last time the two would work together.

Even when both are blinded to their realities, they’re still there for each other. When the Joker and Bruce meet, both having been healed and resurrected by Dionisium following Endgame, the Joker tries to convince him to give up the life of a vigilante — because it will only lead to despair. The Joker knows Batman more than, it seems, he even knows himself. That’s why when things get truly bleak, Batman turns to the Joker for help.

For a current example, look no further than Dark Days, in which the Joker and Batman have been revealed to be working — together, in secret — to save the Multiverse. No one else is trusted by Batman, save the Joker. His white knight. The one who, in Endgame, he embraced in death; the one he held as the life left his body. The one who, in Death of the Family, admitted his love.

Two heroes, two villains, darkness and light, fighting for control of two men locked in endless battle, each trying to “redeem” the other.

We don’t yet know what larger role Joker will play Dark Nights: Metal, except that he’s trying to save the universe as Batman damns it. What will the Joker do when he meets a Batman who has fallen? What will the Joker be when he comes face to face with the Batman Who Laughs? And what will Batman see when a dark vision out of his mind comes trembling forth to destroy his world...

Ben Affleck Reportedly Signs Up For DCEU's Batman Trilogy And A Future 'Batman Beyond' Adaptation

He may have been considered by fans to be the best part of the divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but Ben Affleck's professional relationship with DC and the greater DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been uncertain as of late. Affleck was rumored to be having disagreements with producers, ranging from creative differences to a general dissatisfaction with the DCEU's current direction. These rumors, however, may have finally been put to rest by Ben Affleck, who reportedly just signed up to be a part of the DCEU for the long haul.

Bat-Fleck, More BatmanMovies And Beyond

Comicbookmovie.com have reported that the actor-director of critically acclaimed features like Argo and The Town just signed a contract that solidified his future in the . According to the website's Warner Brothers insiders, Affleck signed on to reprise his role as Gotham's Dark Knight for director Matt Reeves' planned Batman trilogy and the future Batman Beyond adaptations.

"Affleck has signed on to appear as the Batman in Matt Reeves Trilogy. Affleck will play the Dark Knight for three more films, with the last leading into a Batman Beyond film, which will also lead to the next phase of the DC Extended Universe."

While Reeves' take on the Caped Crusader's nocturnal escapades in the crime-ridden Gotham City will surely be something to look out for, the most interesting development here is the confirmation of a DCEU adaptation of .

Batman Beyond was an animated series that acted as a sequel to the critically acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series. Here, an aging Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) has retired and passed the mantle to Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle) in a futuristic, crime-infested Gotham City where old and new foes roam the streets.

Despite being an original concept that didn't start out as a comic,Batman Beyond spawned a large following and has since been considered to be a part of the greater DC canon.

DC and Warner Brothers have been trying to adapt McGinnis' crime-fighting crusade to the big screen for years, but their efforts have proven futile. Following the failure of Batman and Robin in 1997, DC shuffled their plans for a Batman reboot, including a live-action take on Batman Beyond. In the end, DC placed its trust in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, which proved to be a fantastic decision from the studio.

By the time the DCEU would be ready to adapt Batman Beyond, Affleck would be the perfect age to finally take a back seat. Not only will Affleck's age make him a perfect fit for an older Bruce Wayne, but his continued presence in the DCEU would strengthen the cinematic universe's continuity while keeping one of its fan-favorite characters around for a little while longer.

The DCEU may have gotten off to a rocky start, but it's finally shaping up to be the cinematic universe that DC fans deserve. With Ben Affleck's reportedly renewed presence as the most bad-ass Batman to ever hit the big screen, things are looking up for Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Univer

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Is Batman in Flashpoint?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Is Batman in Flashpoint?

Warner Bros. had a pretty eventful panel today, packed with a few surprises. For a lot of DC fans the silent announcement of a Flashpoint movie was the most exciting reveal of the day, or quite possibly the last year. And now things are starting to get a little (or a lot) more interesting as Jeffrey Dean Morgan could end up being the next Batman.

Morgan and Lauren Cohan play Thomas and Martha Wayne, respectively in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and as it's known to DC fans, those two play a large part of Flashpoint, the just announced title for The Flash movie

While at San Diego's Comic-Con at the Walking Dead panel, the Jeffrey Dean Morgan Twitter account posted an image of him and Cohan at the Walking Dead panel, but the interesting part about the post is the caption. The caption reads: "Did you say... Flashpoint?" and then tagged Lauren Cohan in the post. Morgan has expressed interest in a [Flashpoint} project with him jumping into the role of The Dark Knight and that could very well become a reality now.

The Flashpoint storyline was written by DC's Geoff Johns and tells the story of Barry Allen traveling back in time to try and stop the murder of his mother. When he returns to the present day, he finds that his mother is still alive but the world is an entirely different place from the one that he initially left behind. The alternate reality is not a pretty one, the Justice League no longer exists and most importantly here, the robbery of the Wayne family takes an interesting twist as Bruce Wayne is murdered instead of his family. Ultimately, Thomas Wayne becomes Batman and Martha Wayne becomes the Joker.

Now this is speculation at this point, but this could end up being the reason that rumors started to swirl about the studio giving Ben Affleck the boot from The Batman. Affleck addressed those rumors today by stating that he'd play the part of Batman for as long as the studio will have him and the Warner Bros. has pretty much echoed that statement lately. Although it has not been confirmed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan will play a part in Flashpoint, it does make an awful lot of sense and plus, it looks like Morgan is having a lot of fun with us already... But Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Thomas Wayne version of Batman just sounds almost too perfect.

Flashpoint turned the universe on its side in the comic books, imagine what it could do to the DCEU... Again, this is all pure speculation at this point, but it does make sense on a bunch of different levels that Flashpoint would work out this way. Let the Batman wars start up all over again; Ben Affleck might finally lose those Christian Bale comparisons real soon and have to compete with Jeffrey Dean Morgan for Batman supremacy. IN the meantime check out Jeffrey Dean Morgan's social media post below. At this time, Flashpoint doesn't have a director.
